Responsibilities
Under the broad supervision of the Chief of the Arabic Interpretation Section, the incumbent provides interpretation into Arabic of speeches and statements given in English or French and interpretation into English or French of speeches and statements given in Arabic. S/he is routinely assigned to sensitive meetings; routinely functions as team leader of all interpreters assigned to the same meeting. S/he assists in the screening, training and examining of prospective Arabic interpreters. The incumbent may be called upon to serve as week-end duty officer for the Interpretation Service and as Chief Interpreter on missions. S/he may be assigned as Officer-in-Charge of the Section or the Service.
Competencies
Professionalism: punctuality; ability to perform under stress; willingness to travel and keep flexible working hours. Leadership: provide leadership and guidance to more junior interpreters; ability to instruct and advise trainee interpreters, as required; ability to function as Team Leader, as required, of all interpreters assigned to the same meeting; ability to assist the Chief of Section or Service, as appropriate, in screening, training and examining of prospective interpreters; ability to function as Programming Officer and as week-end duty officer, as required or be assigned as Officer-in-Charge of the Section or Service. Teamwork: demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relations as a team member and team leader, in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity. Communications: good interpersonal and communication skills. Commitment to Continuous Learning: ability and willingness to constantly improve linguistic skills; monitor own work, good documentary and terminological preparation for meetings; willingness to acquire and improve technological skills.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status or a combination of academic and professional experience. Must have passed the United Nations Arabic Interpreters' examination.
Work Experience
At least ten years of internationally recognized professional interpreting experience.
Languages
Perfect command of Arabic, and an excellent knowledge of English or French.
Other Skills
Proven ability to interpret from or into other official languages will be an asset.

(Charter of the United Nations - Chapter 3, article 8). English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
