While the STI has much to be proud of with regard to its accomplishments in the arena of translator training, there is another side to this institution as well. Members of the STI have also been very active in the field of research. Professors at the STI, both former and current, have collectively been the recipients of millions of dollars in funding, have written many books and articles, and have presented their work at conferences around the world. They sit on the editorial boards of prestigious journals, they have organized colloquia, and they are active in national and international associations that promote and facilitate research in the field of translation. Graduate students at the STI are also active researchers. They have won impressive scholarships and awards for their work, and they have also presented and published their research.

To celebrate the research accomplishments of the STI over the past 35 years, we have decided to put together a collective containing a selection of original articles written by researchers who have a past or present association with the STI. Note that the idea of the volume is to present new research. It is not meant to be an anthology or collection of articles that have been previously published.

Because the research that has been carried out by STI researchers touches on a wide range of subfields in the discipline of translation, including history of translation, translation theory, literary translation, ethics and translation, audiovisual translation, translation and culture, lexicography and terminology, translation technology, translation pedagogy and more, the theme that has been selected for the volume is "Research in Translation: Past, Present and Future". This theme has been selected to be as inclusive as possible and is not meant to be exclusive of any research area dealing in some way with translation. For instance, the topics of the papers will likely include some that focus on the past (e.g. translation history, historical lexicography), some that focus on the present (e.g. current developments in translation), and some that might be considered more “futuristic” in nature (e.g. translation and technology).

If you are a researcher who has a past or present affiliation with the STI, and you have unpublished work that you would like to submit for possible inclusion in this volume, you are invited to submit a proposal as follows:

Title and 750-word abstract in English or French by February 28, 2007 .

Short biography (5-10 lines), which should include an indication of your past or present affiliation with the STI.

Please send your submission as an email attachment to: Lynne Bowker (lbowker@uottawa.ca), who will forward it to the reading committee.
