    Calls for Papers

    The Departments of Translation Studies in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at United Arab Emirates University in al-‘Ain, calls for papers to be submitted in its 1st International Conference on Translation/Interpretation and the Impact of Globalization which will be held from November 18-20, 2008. Al Ain is the birthplace of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first president of the United Arab Emirates and the fourth largest city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). With a population of over half a million, Al Ain is known as the Garden City of the UAE. It is located in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, directly adjacent to the Omani border.

    Conference Objectives
    The main goal of the conference is to bring together scholars from all over the world to exchange ideas, share experiences and address current translation theories, issues and techniques in all areas of translation and interpretation. Keynote speakers with a wealth of experience are invited to the conference to allow researchers and translators to meet and discuss ideas and explore venues for cooperation in all aspects of translation and interpretation. Keynote speakers are:

    Temple University, USA


    Special emphasis will be placed on translation and interpretation in the Middle East, particularly the UAE, and the challenges facing translators and interpreters. Topics of the conference will include

    Call For Paper and Poster Presentations

    The Conference Organizing Committee would like to invite scholars, practicing translators and interpreters, linguists, nongovernmental organizations to submit posters dealing with the Conference topics to create a platform for interaction with conference participants and audience.

    Conference Format

    The 3-day Conference will consist of plenary presentations by specially invited speakers and selected academic papers relevant to the Conference theme, concurrent academic panels, practitioner round tables and workshops. Speakers present their papers only in English. A selection of the papers presented at the Conference will subsequently be published in a refereed Conference Proceeding edited and published by the Department of Translation Studies.


    Registration Fee

    Registration/conference is $150. This includes two dinners, tours inside and outside the city, coffee, tea, photocopying, etc.

    Submission Guidelines

    Conference participants should submit an abstract of no more than 300-words, typed and double-spaced. There will be 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion. The Conference Organizing Committee will also allow electronic submissions in the form of emails that can be sent to the provided email addresses below. A 50–70 word summary must accompany the cover page of the abstract.

    For authorship, please provide:
    a) name and title
    b) full address
    c) phone number
    d) fax number
    e) e-mail address on the cover page only.

    Please note that the abstract itself should not contain any identifying references to authorship.

    Because the Conference will be hosted both English, all abstracts and summaries for papers and posters must be submitted in English.

    The deadline for all submissions is June 12, 2008. Feedback on acceptance of proposals is set for September 4, 2008. Finalized papers and posters should be submitted no later than September 25, 2008).
