The Summer Intensive Arabic Language Program at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) is a 6-week, 6-credit course aimed
at developing elementary and advanced elementary language skills through formal classroom instruction and daily conversation practice with a native speaker. The program is offered by the Department of Arabic and Translation Studies (ATS), in co-ordination
with the International Exchange Office (IXO); and includes housing on our beautiful campus in Sharjah, as well as weekend excursions to Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

AUS:
AUS is conveniently situated on a beautiful, park-like campus full of Islamic-style architecture, only 15 minutes from historical downtown Sharjah and the city of Dubai. We offer a fully-accredited American-style education grounded in Gulf Arab culture. All programs are co-educational with English as the language of instruction. Our campus offers
many amenities including cafés and restaurants, convenience stores, a health clinic, travel agent, bank, bowling alley, sports complex, bookstore, pharmacy, beauty salon and barber shop.

Sharjah:
In 1998, UNESCO named Sharjah the Cultural
Capital of the Arab World for the work done in preserving and promoting its rich cultural heritage, notably through its numerous museums. Sharjah also aims to revitalize the strong intellectual tradition of the Middle East through education. A noted example of this effort is University City, a complex that is home to 4 institutions of higher learning, including AUS, a learning hospital and a public library.

Eligibility:
All elementary- and advanced elementary- level Arabic students are encouraged to apply. A placement interview will be required for students wishing to register for the more advanced Arabic. Interviews will be held June
8th prior to orientation.

Course Titles:
Intensive Elementary Arabic I
Intensive Elementary Arabic II

Students enrolling in Advanced Elementary Arabic will begin in Chapter 6 of the textbook series al-Kitaab fii Ta’allum al-Arabiyya (Part I, 3rd ed.). Students who have not used this
series previously should independently master the earlier chapters (1-5) in addition to the accompanying alphabet book Alif Baa (3rd ed.).

Course Dates: June 11 to July 22 2013
Arrival: June 7 2013
Orientation: June 8 2013 (including
placement interviews)
Departure: July 26 2013
Deadline to Apply: April 17<sup> </sup>2013

Program Fee:

$5,400
including instruction, housing, fees, and excursions. Fee does not include refundable dorm deposit, meals, books, visa, travel costs, insurance, personal expenses. A non-refundable
$500 down-payment will be due upon acceptance to the program.

Textbooks:
Elementary Arabic will use the books Alif Baa (3rd ed.) and al-Kitaab fii Ta’allum al-Arabiyya (Part I, 3rd ed.).

Advanced Elementary Arabic will use the book al-Kitaab fii Ta’allum al-Arabiyya (Part I, 3rd ed.).
