Here on the pulse of this new day You may have the grace to look up and out And into your sister's eyes, And into your brother's face, Your country, And say simply Very simply With hope - Good morning. الشاعرة في سطورولدت الشاعرة في عام 1928.تعتبر الشاعرة والممثلة مايا احد اقطاب حركة الحقوق المدنية الامريكية. اشتهرت بعملها الادبي "اعرف لماذا يغني الطائر الحبيس، 1969" و "كل الاطفال يحتاجون احذية سفر، 1986".مايا تتقن عدة لغات منها الفرنسية، الاسبانية، الانجليزية، الايطالية، والعربية.وعلى الرغم من حصولها على العديد من شهادات الدكتوراة الفخرية من جامعات مرموقة، مايا لم تتلقي اي تعليم جامعي.
