It is experienced but not explained. Of course, all national identities are problematic. But Englishness seems to be particularly anomalous." (Mike Sutton). It is precisely because Englishness is a problematic notion that it has recently received critical attention and has been brought into the foreground again. Indeed it is not just some stereotyped form of behaviour but it also expresses an unstable identity resulting from the convergence of historical, political and social factors. What therefore lies behind the notion of Englishness? What does it mean to be English? How has the term evolved over the centuries, more particularly since the early 18th century, and how is it to be understood psychologically, linguistically, sociologically and ideologically speaking? From both a historical and a contemporary point of view, what distinguishes Englishness from Britishness, a notion which would appear to have emerged in 1707? What is Englishness in fact, how is it perceived from within and abroad and how is it expressed in the various forms of discourse? In other words, how is it represented in literature and the arts? We shall thus try to analyse Englishness as confluence and friction in relation to nation, citizenship, religion, ethnicity, history, tradition and innovation, centre and periphery. This international multidisciplinary conference will address the question of Englishness from these different standpoints, from the 18th century to the present day. It is hoped that papers will offer various interpretations of the way Englishness is expressed in history, the social sciences, literature and language. <br />Please send a 150-word summary and the title of your paper before 30th June 2006 to both organisers: Agnès Alexandre-Collier (Agnes.Collier@u-bourgogne.fr) and Floriane Reviron (floriane.reviron@u-bourgogne.fr).
