Translating Scotland and Cuba: 2006 Symposium

First Symposium on Translating Scotland and Cuba – theories, methodologies and practices, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, 27 June 2006, 2-5:30pm, MBG14 (Mary Burton/Management Building), Heriot-Watt University, Riccarton Campus, Edinburgh .

The aim of this initial half-day symposium is to launch a new joint project on Scottish and Cuban literatures in translation between the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, Heriot-Watt University, and the Facultad de Lenguas Extranjeras, Universidad de La Habana. Running in parallel with a series of informal practical workshops, the June 2006 Symposium will offer a range of presentations on contexts, theories, practices and methodologies of translation, as a starting point for the collaborative project.

The project engages in cross-cultural dialogue around the issue of translating non-dominant cultures for new audiences, specifically between Cuba and Scotland. It takes as a basic premise the fact that, since translation involves the understanding of cultures, rather than purely language, and that particularly in the cases of both Cuba and Scotland, an understanding of the wider cultural context is integral to a successful engagement with texts, any attempt to translate texts from these contexts should foreground cultural issues, including questions of identity and representation. It is hoped that the initial symposium and subsequent encounters will create a collaborative working atmosphere to promote dialogue between the two cultures.
