Cologne Conference on Specialised Translation

The growing relevance of specialised translation in the applied branches of
translation studies, i.e. professional translation, translation quality
assessment and translation teaching, has also brought about a more in-depth
consideration of specialised translation in the theoretical/descriptive
branches of the discipline. Though this has led to some new and valuable
insights, specialised translation still remains a largely under-researched
field. This two-day international conference focuses on new approaches to
specialised translation covering, but not limited to, the following areas of
interest:
- Theoretical and methodological approaches to specialised translation
- Contrastive and corpus-based studies related to specific aspects of
specialised translation in the area of expert-to-expert communication
from various domains (such as science and technology, medicine, law,
economics, architecture, etc.)
- Linguistic aspects of specialised translation
- Extra-linguistic aspects of specialised translation
- Ideological aspects of specialised translation
- Didactics of specialised translation

Applications are invited for the position of Assistant Professor in Chinese-English translation in the Translation Programme. The Programme was established in 1990 with the aim of training sophisticated cross-cultural communicators to serve the local community and the Mainland of China. The media of instruction are English and Cantonese/Putonghua. In addition to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, the appointee will also be expected to play an active role in related research and publication, and be responsible for supervision of undergraduate honours projects and postgraduate dissertations at the Master’s and Doctoral level.
Applicants should possess a PhD Degree in Translation or related fields, experience in research and teaching at the tertiary level, and preferably some administrative experience. The successful candidate is expected to have expertise in the practical and theoretical dimensions of interpreting and/or Chinese-English translation, especially translation in the fields of literature, culture and the creative industries. Dedication to excellence in teaching and in research is essential, as is commitment to professional work in the field.
Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract of two to three years. Re-appointment thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

We invite the submission of abstracts for short presentations at our last workshop in a series of four on “One brain, two languages”. Up to four abstracts will be selected for 20-minute presentations.
Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words excluding title and references. The topic of the presentation should be related to the general theme of the workshop and could address but need not be limited to the following questions:
How can theoretical models of bilingualism and the brain help improve techniques of interpreting and translating in both the auditory and visual modality?
What are the roles of attention, inhibitory control, and memory in translation and interpretation?
How do structural differences between languages affect performance in translation and interpretation?
Abstracts should be submitted BY 11 January 2010 by e-mail attachment in MS-Word or PDF to 1brain2languages@googlemail.com

The translation of cultural elements is often problematic. It mainly involves:
- terms which are too technical,
- expressions of specific visions of the world,
- concepts over which there is no consensus such as those pertaining to “sense”, or “metaphysics”.
Therefore, we should be asking ourselves how best to stimulate the translator so as to obtain a better intercultural communication, through a more aggressive creativity and decision-making.
How to develop the student’s cognitive resources? Which references? Which texts? Which equipments?
Are there norms to help teaching decision-making in translation?
General Guidelines
Summaries must bear the following characteristics:
* To be 300 words in order to be selected, please avoid lengthy summaries
* To be written in the languages taught in the Department of Translation and Interpreting: Arabic, French, English, Spanish and German.
* To include a short bibliography.
* A short paragraph (100 words) describing the participant's research projects and scientific interests, as well as a list of his/her main publications is to be included.
