During the last 25 years or so, a growing awareness of the importance of the Islamic handwritten heritage led to new research on the production of books in Muslim societies before the introduction of the printing press. Codicology, that is 'the study or knowledge of codices' developped in the sphere of Islamic manuscripts. At the same time, the need to train specialists working in this field is increasingly felt and the al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation which had already started some programmes in this directions decided to publish the present handbook as an answer to this new situation.
