| What is this life but one brief-dwelling dream, That came, then vanished ere we knew it near? My hours and days have passed like shadows’ gleam, And all my years seem gathered in a tear. |
وَمَا الحَيَاةُ سِوَى حُلْمٍ أَلَمَّ بِنَا قَدْ مَرَّ كَالْحُلْمِ سَاعَاتِي وَأَيَّامِي |
| Have I indeed lived out these mortal days? So strong the doubt that rises in my breast; Or were they but confused and broken ways Of dreams that troubled an unquiet rest? |
هَلْ عِشْتُ حَقّاً؟ يَكَادُ الشَّكُّ يَغْلِبُنِي أَمْ كَانَ مَا عِشْتُهُ أَضْغَاثَ أَحْلَامِ |
| Within the closing and the opening eye, The child has grown an old man, worn and grey; The morning scarcely brightened in the sky Before its light had faded into day. |
فِي مِثْلِ غَمْضَةِ عَيْنٍ وَانْتِبَاهَتِهَا قَدْ أَصْبَحَ الطِّفْلُ شَيْخاً أَبْيَضَ الْهَامِ |
| Now weakness overtakes each faltering stride, If strength remains to move one step at all; The weight of years sits heavily beside My weary limbs, and holds me in its thrall. |
يُقَارِبُ الضَّعْفُ خَطْوِي إِنْ قَدَرْتُ عَلَى خَطْوٍ وَيُقْعِدُنِي أَثْقَالُ أَعْوَامِي |
| My speech, once faithful, answers me no more, Though still I summon what it once could frame; My pens and papers, steadfast heretofore, Have failed the covenant they used to claim. |
وَخَانَ عَهْدِي بَيَانِي إِذْ دَعَوْتُ بِهِ وَخَانَ عَهْدِيَ أَوْرَاقِي وَأَقْلَامِي |
| My sight and hearing both have turned away— Alas for them, once servants of my will; My body, bowed beneath its slow decay, Bears pain and sickness, and must bear them still. |
وَخَانَنِي بَصَرِي وَالسَّمْعُ، وَيْحَهُمَا! وَالْجِسْمُ نَاءَ بِأَسْقَامِي وَآلَامِي |
| Yet were my heart not certain of its Lord, The One, whose throne no other power may share, I should account my life an empty word, A passing dream dissolved upon the air. |
لَوْلَا يَقِينِي بِرَبِّي لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَمَا حَسِبْتُ حَيَاتِي غَيْرَ أَوْهَامِ |
