 The Makkan and Madinan Revelations. The Qur’an was revealed in sections to Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) from the beginning of his prophethood until shortly before his death. Thus, the Qur’an came down continuously over a period of twenty-three years.Many sections of the Qur’an were gradually revealed to solve the problems which existed among the Muslim communities in both Makkah and Madinah. Since the problems and needs of Makkah were different from those of Madinah, the revelations of Makkah and Madinah have special characteristics of their own.It is important to know the difference between the revelations of Makkah and Madinah if the Qur’an itself is to be clearly understood. Because of the great importance of the Qur’an to Islam, Muslim scholars from the time of the Sahabah (Prophet’s Companions) have devoted much time and effort in this area of study.

Iman:The Makkan verses concentrated on principles which would build the Iman (faith) of the early Muslims who were in a minority and under a lot of pressure from Makkan society. These verses spoke of the importance of fearing Allah, being patient, perseverant, truthful and trustworthy. 8. Short Verses:The Makkan Suras usually had short verses, catchy rhymes, and a very strong rhythm. These qualities were meant to catch the attention of listeners who were basically opposed to the message of Islam.9.Prohibition of bad Practices:The Makkan Suras called upon people to prevent from doing some bad practices such as: killing, burying alive newborn girls and eating up the orphan’s wealth.

This includes verses which were revealed during the battles, as well as those revealed in Makkah and Mina during and after the Farewell Hajj. All of these verses are considered Madinan because they represent the revelations of the second stage of the Islamic Da’wah in which the consolidation of the Islamic state took place. As a result of that, we find a number of Madeenan verses clarifying Christian misconceptions about Prophet Jesus and Allah.
