People make history more than history makes people . But there can be no race or nation whose history is more personalized than that of the Arabs. for nearly fourteen hundred years , from the rise of prophet Mohammed , the story of the Arab world unfolds like a long mountain range , with soaring peaks of conquest and power representing the great historical figures _ khalid Ibn al Walid , Saladin , Abd- al -Rahman, Baybars , Mohammed Ali , Nasser - and in between the peaks , steep troughs and valleys showing a precipitous decline after each great figure has left the scene . the Arab world has been ruled down the centuries partly or wholly by a succession of different dynasties - Ommayads , Abbasids , Fatimids , Ayyubids , Mamelukes , Ottomans , the family of Muhammed Ali and , most recently , Hashemites . With complete regularity the founder of each dynasty would carve out an empire which his heirs and successors would sooner or later lose, after which a new leader and a new dynasty would repeat the process.
This pattern of great achievement and steep decline has been going on in the Arab world ever since the rise of Islam gave Muhammad's followers a militant faith with which to go forth from Arabia in the seventh century A.D. and conquer Palestine, Egypt , Syria , Iraq . First , the dynasty of the Ommayads , having failed to strangle Islam at birth , embraced the faith , seized the power from Muhammad's successors and , transferring the caliphate from Mecca to Damascus , ranged across Asia , Africa and Europe to build the largest empire in the world's history - from Mongolia to Morocco and from Aden to the Pyrenees . Then the center of power shifted suddenly to Iraq, as Abbasid descendants of Muhammad's family took their terrible revenge on the Ommayads and almost wiped them out of existence .
