عَمِّي حَمُّودي

كانَ عَمِّي حَمُّودي رَجلاً شَوْذبًا نحيفًا ضامِرَ الخصْرِ وأَهْيَفَ ككلبِهِ السَّلوقي وكانتْ عيْناهُ غائرتان يقِظتان لا يَـفوتهما شيْئًا تتطَّلِعان مِن وجهٍ قدْ تحرَّقَ بلونِ طلْحِ الصَّحراءِ الميِّت لكنَّهُ كانَ حمِيُّ الأنفِ أشمَ وسيِّدًا من لهاميمِ الرِّجالِ في قوْمِهِ ورجُلاً يُعوَّلُ عليه في السَّراءِ والضَّراءِ أو هكذا كان الأشرافُ في الصَّحراء الذين تربوا على قناعة بأنَّهم أسمى مِن غيرهم من الملإِ بفضلِ مولدهم الشَّريف.

My uncle Hammoudi

My uncle Hammoudi was a lanky man, flat-flanked and lean like his greyhound. His eyes were deep-set, alert to everything that was going on and looked out from a face that was burned to desert dead acacias but he was puffed up with pride, haughty, a man of high rank in his people and a person of consequence in happiness and misfortune or so were the nobility in the desert who had been brought up with the belief that they were superior to the rest of the people by virtue of their upstanding birth
