Cultural Differences:
There is a very close link between language and culture. People who speak a certain language have a culture and they express this culture by the use of the language they speak.
There are cultural differences between English and Arabic (the cultural concepts that are expressed by the use of English and Arabic). The cultural differences are reflected in the use of words, idioms and proverbs.
For instance, in English, there is the concept of 'girlfriend' which does not exist in Arabic. Therefore, a translator finds difficulty in translating it into Arabic. Also, in English there is Halloween which children celebrate at the end of the month of October and in which children call on houses and ask to be given sweets or play tricks on people .This concept has no equivalent in Arabic . A translator has no alternative except to transcribe the word referring to this concept in Arabic and provide an explanation for it. Also, an expression which is connected with Halloween is trick or treat. Even if the translator is familiar with the English Culture s/he would find difficulty translating it, but understanding the English Culture would help enormously in translating it. On the basis of this understanding, the phrase can be translated as;
الحلوى أو الخدعة
Proverbs and idioms and certain expressions are connected with culture. Without understanding the culture one is translating from or into would not be able to produce good and accurate translation of proverbs, idioms and certain expressions.
